Before 1939 Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, wanted to start a cultural event in France to rival the Venice International Film Festival. More than a year after the end of the war in 1946, the first edition of the International Film Festival in Cannes finally took place. It was subsequently held every September – except in 1948 and 1950 – and then every May from 1952 onwards.
Since this year, every May, the greatest international stars climb the red carpet and the famous steps from the Palais to present their films to critics. On the program are the official film selections:
- 22 are competing for the prized Palme d’Or and 6 other major awards
- Un Certain Regard’ featuring work that is highly original in message and conception.
At the same time, Cannes hosts the Marché du Film, which encouraged networking and interaction between all those involved in the film industry, and the Cannes Court Métrage, which encourages emerging talents as well as the particular format of short films.
That is why the main challenge in Cannes is of course finding a place to stay! To be part of the Cannes film festival, book now at Le Cavendish.
